'Born on September 23, 1920, in Yerevan, Armenia, Alexander Arutiunian (Harutunyan) graduated from theKomitas Conservatory in Yerevan with degrees in both composition and Piano. He later continued his studies at the House of Armenian Culture (Moscow, 1946-48) under Litinksy, Peyko and Tsukkerman.
His music has been awardednumerous prizes including the Armenian state prize, the Alexandrov Gold Medal and the State Prize of the USSR. In 1970 Arutiunian was made a People's Artist of the USSR and in 1983, because of the success of his music in theUnited States, he was awarded the 'Orpheus' diploma.
Arutiunian's music covers a wide range of styles and idioms including opera, numerous vocal works and a large body of instrumental compositions. Much of his music is verylyrical in nature, influenced by folksongs and peasant music. One of his better known instrumental compositions, the Concerto in Ab (1950) for Trumpet and Orchestra, has long been a standard in the solo Trumpet repertoire.' -Alan H. Siebert
